Wayne County Schools continue with its Non Traditional Instruc-tion (NTI) days, as the district remains closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Superintendent Wayne Roberts updated board members regarding NTI
instruction during a meeting held on Thursday, April 16. He said
overall officials are pleased with the response from students who are
continuing their classes at home, as well as the support of parents
who are helping with school work.
Roberts added that there have been some issues with students who may
not have good internet service in their home or other problems that
have caused them to struggle with NTI instruction. He said staff is
working on issues to try to help students through this time.
While classes have been cancelled through at least May 1, Roberts
indicated that further decisions regarding this school year are
likely to be made this week. Superintendents are scheduled to
participate in a conference call with Governor Andy Beshear in regard
to plans for the remainder of the school year.
Along with the educational changes, school officials are looking at
a couple of different grading options for the final nine weeks of the
school year. Brian Dishman, Chief Academic Officer for the district,
stated that schools have been looking at one option that would
provide a pass or fail grade for classes.
A second option would be to weight grades, giving the first three
nine-week periods significantly more credit than the final nine
weeks. Basically, the decision will be made at each of the schools by
the site based councils.
In regard to graduation, Roberts said the state has allowed local
school boards to lower graduation requirements during this time in
order to accommodate some of the issues they are dealing with.
He recommended that the board not take any action on lowering
requirements. Instead he asked them to grant him and high school
Principal Justin Alley to work with the few students who have be
having problems right now.
This would allow them to come up with some individual solutions,
Roberts indicated. The board approved his recommendation.
Roberts also updated board members regarding the district's
commitment to continue to provide meals for students each week. He
noted that last week, the district provided approximately 6,000 meals
to students through either their delivery service or by meals that
were picked up at school.
They are currently doing deliveries one day a week along about 10
routes, Roberts indicated. There are also designated days and time
for meals to be picked up at school. Nutrition staff are providing
five shelf stable breakfasts for each student each week and five
frozen lunches.
    In other action, the board:
    • Heard an update regarding some of the ongoing building projects on
campus. The ATC is complete and the parking area should be
blacktopped this week. Final grading and seeding is being completed
at the soccer field, and demolition work is underway at the former
ATC building, which will be the new district services building.
    • Approved emergency leave for the 2019-2020 under Senate Bill 177,
which is related to COVID-19.
    • Agreed to continue their contract with Roberts Insurance for
student accident insurance.
    • Agreed to continue their contract with Assured Partners NL
Insurance Agency for property, equipment, liability, auto and workers
compensation insurance.
    • Amended certified employee evaluation plans for the current school year.
