Mask

Polly Sartin worked on sewing a reusable mask that will be donated to local health care workers.

A little cotton and some elastic could make a big difference for local health care workers, who will receive some reusable face masks made by members of the Contented Heart Quilt Guild.

About five members of the group gathered one morning last week to
pick up patterns for the safety masks and to get basic instructions
on how to make them.
Then, the women took the projects home with them and began the
effort to create masks for employees of Golden Years Nursing Home, as
well as the Wayne County Hospital.
Polly Sartin, a member of the quilting group, said the women were
aware of the critical shortage of protective gear for medical
personnel, and they wanted to do something to help. Fellow guild
member Ruby Edwards googled the pattern for the masks and found some
instructions.
Sartin said that each mask is made from cotton material, elastic and
a pipe cleaner. She noted that these are reusable masks that can be
bleached and worn again.
It takes about 45 minutes to one hour to make one mask.
The work requires a little cutting and a lot of sewing. The masks
start with a 9 x 14 piece of cotton. Sartin noted that the most
difficult part so far has been finding the right size elastic for the
masks.
Sartin said they do not have a goal for the number of masks they
want to make. Guild members are using donated materials to make the
masks.
Once they are completed, they will be delivered to the nursing home and to other healthcare workers.
